in other words, until we add a control to set the aspect ratio/size of the main output numerically, setup is best performed when you've actually got a display that's capable of 1920x480. the implication here is that a layer positioned at (0.5, 0.5) will move around onscreen as you change the aspect ratio of the main output (because VDMX refrains from distorting footage).
keep in mind that the positioning controls at the bottom of each layer window are *relative*- no matter how big your clips are/what aspect ratio your display is, if the layer's position is -1 the clip's *exactly* offscreen, 0 is centered, and 1 is *exactly* offscreen in the opposite direction. the results should look something like this:įeel free to start experimenting with whatever clips at whatever resolutions you've got handy, you should be able to put together the setup described with pretty much any clips. if you want a 4th layer to be composited atop the three layers, just make a 4th layer and enable the "auto-scale" toggle in the layer size/position controls box the 4th layer will be stretched to fill the entirety of the output window. The solution is to use the layer position controls in the bottom of the layer window to move each layer to it's own area of the screen move one layer to the left, and move one layer to the right (the third layer should be centered by default). this is what makes it perfect for expansive, panoramic displays. it's not possible for your computer to address one of it's screens as an individual display because it's not, per se.

the update to the public beta (which should be out any day now) has a new plugin called "auxdisplay" which even allows you to put individual layers (or groups of layers) on different displays, meaning that vdmx is technically capable not only of multi-screen displays, but multi-channel displays, and multi-channel multi-screen displays. Matrox aside, multi-screen output has been in vdmx since the public beta hit the streets, in the cocoa gridpro public betas for easily over eight months, and we even had an unreleased effect which allowed this in the release (read: old) version of gridpro.

as far as vj rigs go, you can't beat the portability and power of a macbook pro and a matrox. it's got nothing to do with the software- the matrox tricks your computer into thinking that it's looking at one really big display, and then splits that display up into three distinct outputs. it makes every vj app capable of multi-screen output, period- no exceptions (if i'm wrong, someone please correct me).
